Be Responsible with Your Seat

Friday, 20 February 2015. Dee Marshall

white-house-552663 640On several occasions I’ve been invited to The White House and one time in particular First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a breakfast for African-American women leaders. On another occasion more recently it was an event of all women leaders. In both instances the event was in the same location at The White House … I call it a room of a few.

It was a room of a few because the room didn't have many seats. But the seats were all occupied by leaders of some of the most prominent organizations and associations around the country and a few other stakeholders. So why we were in the room and what does this have to do with you?

It’s safe to say we were all in the room because we had reach. We had access to the masses; both influencers and regular people.  We were trusted to go back and share the information to empower the people. Isn't this true in a lot of circumstances? Not everyone can fit in the room or have a seat at the table but a chosen few will always have a seat. But it’s a seat not their own. Leaders and/or the chosen few are privy to information for the purpose of sharing the information and taking some sort of action.

And so here was the take away each time I went to 600 Pennsylvania Avenue and what you should know about leadership if you are a leader or aspiring leader. “You don’t hold the seat for yourself but to serve others”. Whether you have the title of leadership or not, whether you manage or lead or not, whether you run a business, champion a cause or not, whether you are the head of household or not, YOU ARE A LEADER and you’re responsible for serving others with what has been entrusted to you.

I don’t know about you but I hold myself to a higher standard. I want to be responsible with my seat and the purpose for which I was sent. To the White House or any place I go.  I encourage you to do the same. When you have access, be responsible with the seat.  If you want access, be responsible with what’s in front of you right now.

How to stay true to yourself

Thursday, 31 July 2014. Dee Marshall

Be careful of that offer on the table.

Have you ever had a job offer on the table so juicy it made your head spin?  And did the opportunity conflict with what you really wanted for your life……………BUT it was such an awesome compensation package you considered turning away from what you loved to pursue the deal on the table?

Ok, well if that’s you, never allow money to pull you away from what you love. If you are running your own business or pursuing a passion or home with your kids, be okay with that and know it’s rarely a good thing to let money be your motivator.  A good problem to have is that someone wants your gift, skill and talent and is willing to pay for it, but you are torn. However, you must know your worth and what you want in life so as not to be pulled away and pimped when the time comes for you to make a decision (sorry it had to be said).  Watch and listen this VLOG.
